Serbian President Alexander Vucic sent a letter to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin through Russian Ambassador Alexander Botan-Kharchenko, in which he expressed congratulations on Victory Day over Fascism on May 9. On May 6, the diplomat attended a reception with the Serbian leader in Belgrade.

"I gave the ambassador a letter for Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom I congratulated on Victory Day, one of the brightest holidays in the history of mankind, with the message that May 9 remains an eternal symbol of the defiance and heroism of our peoples," Vucic said on his Instagram page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

Vucic noted that Serbia's duty is to preserve the memory of all the victims of the Great Patriotic War (WWII) who gave their lives for justice and truth. The Serbian leader stressed that the country would not allow attempts to rewrite history.

On the same day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova indicated that Russia's diplomatic missions in the European Union (EU) countries were ready for possible provocations during the May 9 celebrations. The diplomat stressed that, according to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the host States are obliged to guarantee the personal safety of ambassadors, as well as to ensure the protection of diplomatic missions.
