An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred in the Pacific Ocean near the coast of the Northern Kuril Islands. This was announced on May 6 by Elena Semenova, head of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station.

"An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 was registered at 16:52 (8:52 Moscow time) on May 6. Its epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean 185 km south of the city of Severo-Kurilsk on Paramushir Island, the center was at a depth of 23 km," she told RIA Novosti.

According to Semenova, there was no data on the magnitude of the earthquake, and no tsunami alert was announced.

Semenova also reported on April 22 that aftershocks of magnitude 5.3 were recorded in the Pacific Ocean near the Northern Kuriles. The earthquake was centered at a depth of 34 km. In Severo-Kurilsk, fluctuations in the earth's surface were felt with a force of two to three points. The threat of a tsunami was not announced after the incident.
