On May 6, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova denied rumors that she and her family had U.S. citizenship.

"No one in my family: neither me, nor my husband, nor my daughter, nor mom and dad have any other citizenship and have never had. Both I and my closest relatives have never had a residence permit or extended visas, which are equivalent to a residence permit," she said on Sputnik radio.

On May 3, Zakharova announced that Russia does not recognize the imposition of U.S. citizenship on the children of employees of Roszagran institutions.
