- The UN expressed hope for the successful implementation of the truce between Russia and Ukraine
The United Nations (UN) welcomes the truces announced by the Russian and Ukrainian sides and hopes for their successful implementation. This was announced on May 6 by the representative of the UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric.
"We welcome the unilateral cease—fire announced by Ukraine, which is scheduled to begin on the night of May 5-6, as well as the cease-fire announced by the Russian Federation on May 8-9," he said during a briefing for journalists.
He noted that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also hopes for a successful truce and reiterates his call for an urgent cessation of hostilities.
On May 4, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin had decided to declare a truce on May 8-9 in honor of celebrating the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War (WWII). The ministry expressed the hope that the Ukrainian side would also join the ceasefire.
Later that day, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky declared a regime of silence on the night of May 5-6. According to him, he allegedly did not receive proposals on the terms of the truce for the period of Victory Day celebrations on May 8 and 9 from Moscow.
