- The Parliament of Gagauzia announced the cancellation of the elections scheduled for June 21.
The authorities of Gagauzia canceled the elections to the National Assembly (Parliament) scheduled for June 21, as the region does not have time to prepare for voting due to obstacles from Chisinau. This was announced on May 6 by the Vice-Chairman of the Parliament, Giorgi Leychu.
"The elections will not take place on June 21. This is unequivocal, all deadlines have been passed. Even if we hypothetically imagine that Chisinau will stop blocking their holding, we still won't have time," Leitchu told TASS.
It is specified that a new voting date will be set after the completion of negotiations with the central authorities of Moldova. It is noted that the participants in the process are interested in overcoming the crisis as soon as possible.
"We were offered to make a one-time decision only for holding elections to the National Assembly. The new parliament will have to fully improve the regulatory framework in this area," Leitchu concluded.
On January 22, deputies of the Gagauz Autonomy canceled the elections to the local parliament scheduled for March 22. It was clarified that information about the new voting date or possible alternative solutions has not yet been made public.
The head of the region, Evgenia Gutsul, said on February 12 that the Moldovan authorities continue to exert political pressure on the Gagauz Autonomy in order to deprive its residents of the right to choose their own future. The head of Gagauzia called for careful consideration of the elections to the legislative body of the autonomy.
