The actions of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) are gradually transforming the Baltic into a zone of tension, which creates great risks for shipping. This was announced on May 6 by the Ambassador-at-large of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Artyom Bulatov.

"Thanks to the efforts of NATO and the European Union, it (the Baltic Sea. It is increasingly becoming a zone of confrontation, creating significant risks for navigation in its waters," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

According to the diplomat, the Baltic Sea has long been an area of exclusively mutually beneficial cooperation between the countries of the region. It served not only as an important European transport artery, but also as a link for many extra-regional logistics chains.

Bulatov said on May 4 that the risks of incidents involving intentional damage to underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea remain. According to the diplomat, the purpose of these provocative actions is to spread information about environmental pollution in the information space and create "safety zones" that are not provided for internationally.

Bulatov announced on the same day that NATO was rapidly strengthening its combat capabilities near the Kaliningrad region. He noted that patrolling of the airspace over the Baltic continues.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned back on January 20 that provocations against the Kaliningrad region would be suicidal for those who start them. According to him, various unfriendly actions on the part of Europe force Russia to suspect them of preparing a provocation against the country.
