Experts admitted the death of Timmy, a humpback whale stuck off the coast of Germany
Timmy the humpback whale, previously stuck in shallow waters off the coast of Germany, is probably dead. This was reported on May 5 by Der Spiegel magazine with reference to experts from the Maritime Museum in Stralsund.
The "extremely weakened animal " did not have sufficient strength to swim at great depths for a long time, and is no longer alive," the article says.
In addition, the museum's experts noted that data on the whale's condition and location had not been received since its release into the North Sea on May 2. Experts called on the volunteers who were involved in the evacuation of the mammal to release the correct data from GPS beacons mounted on the whale's body.
The DPA news agency reported that Timmy the whale was released into the North Sea after two entrepreneurs financed a barge to transport the trapped animal to freedom. Marine biologist Fabian Ritter noted that the whale's ability to swim and dive normally remains questionable after such a long stay in shallow water.
The Bild newspaper reported on April 25 that German specialists had begun the crucial phase of the operation to rescue Timmy the humpback whale. According to the new plan, the whale is going to be towed towards the Atlantic in an improvised "underwater aquarium" on a special barge. Veterinarians assessed his condition as stable and severe, but noted local improvements.
