The administration of US President Donald Trump, which previously adhered to a policy of non-interference in the development of artificial intelligence (AI), is now considering the possibility of introducing verification of new artificial intelligence (AI) models. This was reported on May 5 by The New York Times (NYT), citing sources among American officials.

"The administration is discussing the possibility of issuing an executive order to establish an AI working group that will bring together technology company executives and government officials to explore possible oversight procedures. Among the potential plans is the development of a formal government verification process for new AI models," the article says.

It is reported that representatives of the White House informed Anthropic, Google and OpenAI about some possible options for installing surveillance. At the same time, neither the presidential administration nor the heads of technology companies have a consensus on the effectiveness of such a solution, the newspaper reports. Many fear that excessive government controls will slow down American innovation in competition with China.

Trump's abrupt change in AI policy is driven by growing public concern about the threats that new technologies pose to jobs, energy prices, education, privacy, and the mental health of the public, the article says.

The Financial Times newspaper reported on April 10 that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant held a meeting with the heads of the largest American banks to discuss cyber risks related to the new model of Anthropic AI. It clarifies that Bessent has called bankers to make sure that they are aware of potential threats and are taking measures to protect their systems. The concern is caused by the ability of the latest Anthropic model to identify cyber security vulnerabilities that can be exploited by intruders.
