- Ambassador Koruchnov announced that NATO was practicing exercises to capture the Kaliningrad region
The North Atlantic Alliance is practicing scenarios of a naval blockade and seizure of the territory of the Kaliningrad Region during military exercises. This was announced by Russian Ambassador to Norway Nikolai Korchunov on Monday, May 5.
According to the diplomat, the countries of the bloc have repeatedly demonstrated their willingness to restrict the freedom of commercial navigation in violation of international law.
"NATO members, with their characteristic arrogance, tend to consider the Baltic Sea their "inner lake." The UK—led exercises are working out scenarios for a naval blockade and seizure of the Kaliningrad region," Korchunov said in an interview with TASS.
The ambassador noted that London is also seeking to strengthen control over maritime communications in the North Atlantic, involving the resources of European allies, including Norway.
"The seriousness of such plans cannot be underestimated — the alliance has the necessary naval capabilities, and the norms of international law have never been a serious obstacle for the West when it comes to the struggle to maintain its dominance in world affairs," he stressed.
Korchunov added that Russia has the resources to respond to threats to its strategic maritime communications. The Russian Foreign Ministry is cooperating on this issue with international partners who consider the West's claims to dominance in the sea unacceptable. The Ministry of Defense, the Security Council and other relevant agencies are developing practical measures to ensure security and protect interests in the Arctic and the Baltic, including those of a military-technical nature, the agency's interlocutor concluded.
Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Artyom Bulatov said on May 4 that NATO was rapidly strengthening its combat capabilities near the Kaliningrad region. He noted that patrolling of the airspace over the Baltic continues.
