- The expert assessed the impact of reducing the US presence in Germany, Europe and Russia
Prokhor Tebin, Director of the Center for Military-Economic Studies at the Institute of World Military Economics and Strategy at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, spoke on Monday, May 4, about the consequences of reducing the US military contingent in Germany for the European Union (EU) and Russia.
Earlier, on May 2, US President Donald Trump said that the United States could reduce the number of its military contingent in Germany by more than 5,000 people. The politician did not provide specific figures for the planned reduction in the presence of military personnel in Germany.
According to Tebin, the current reduction is not critical and fits into the general line of Washington.
"On the one hand, the US decision to reduce the military contingent is a reaction typical of Trump's management style. On the other hand, it is part of the long—term policy of the United States to reduce its involvement in European affairs to a limited extent," he told Mail News.
The expert noted that Trump's policy involves strengthening the role of European allies in ensuring their own security, while the United States seeks to maintain its leading position.
Tebin believes that this cannot be called a definite plus for Russia, since such actions contribute to the further growth of the political and military activity of the EU and European powers, the increase in military spending, the development of the military-industrial complex, as well as the intensification of discussions about European nuclear deterrence.
On May 1, the Reuters news agency, citing the Pentagon, reported that the United States would withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany within 6-12 months, RT reports. It is noted that the reduction in the number of troops will allow the number of American troops in Europe to return approximately to the level that existed before 2022. 360.ru .
Austrian geopolitical analyst Patrick Poppel noted on May 2 that the withdrawal of US troops from Germany is perceived very positively by many Germans, but Washington's decision may be a signal for the EU. He also pointed to attempts by European states to act independently in the field of armaments, which, according to him, could lead to an escalation in relations with Russia.
