Croatian police reported the discovery of the bodies of four migrants and 15 more emaciated people on the border with Slovenia. Migrants could become victims of human trafficking. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on May 4.

According to police, the dead and injured migrants were found near the border town of Karlovac. Two of the survivors were in serious condition and were sent to the hospital. 13 people were placed in a local refugee center.

It was established that an unknown truck driver had dropped the group off at the border. All of them reported "inhumane conditions" during the trip.

According to the newspaper, the investigation is ongoing. At the same time, Reuters notes that criminal groups operate in the region, in particular those involved in human trafficking. Many of them take advantage of the insecurity of migrants who are trying to reach EU countries via the so-called "Balkan Route".

On April 22, Reuters reported that the number of immigrants permanently residing in the European Union reached a record high of 64.2 million in 2025, which is about 2.1 million more than in 2024. Germany ranks first in the EU in terms of the number of migrants: 18 million foreigners live in the country.
