Over the past three weekends and holidays in May, 790 accidents occurred on Russian roads, in which 93 people were killed and 955 injured. 85 of the dead were passengers and drivers. This was reported to Izvestia on May 4 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

29 accidents involving buses were recorded, in which two people were killed, and 35 more road users, including four children, required medical assistance. The reason for 12 bus accidents was traffic violations by their drivers.

As a result of 147 road accidents, 50 of which occurred at pedestrian crossings and 97 outside their area of operation, eight pedestrians were killed, and another 146 were injured in various degrees of severity. Among the injured were 49 child pedestrians, 32 of whom were injured when crossing the roadway outside the designated areas.

In addition, 156 accidents involving minors were registered, as a result of which 167 young road users were injured, including 61 passengers and 30 motor transport drivers. Six children were killed, five of whom were passengers in vehicles and one pedestrian.

So, in Khabarovsk, a 59-year-old crossover driver, moving through a courtyard, when turning left, was not convinced of the safety of the maneuver and ran over an eight-year-old boy who was unaccompanied by adults roller skating in the yard. The third grader died.

In the Voronezh Region, on 619 km of the R-22 Kaspiy federal highway, a 25-year-old passenger car driver drove into the oncoming lane of the road while overtaking in an authorized place, where he collided tangentially with another passenger car driven by a 43-year-old motorist. After that, the second car collided with two trucks traveling in the lane of the culprit of the car accident and in the same direction. The accident killed the 12-year-old son of the driver of the second passenger car, who was in the back seat with his seat belt fastened. His father and the second passenger of the same vehicle were hospitalized with injuries, and the passenger from the car of the culprit of the car accident was sent for outpatient treatment after medical treatment.

In the evening, in one of the rural settlements of the Smolensk region, an intoxicated 49-year-old car driver drove to the side of the road intended for oncoming traffic, where he collided with an electric scooter driven by a 19-year-old boy. After the impact, the car of the culprit of the collision left the roadway and overturned. A scooter driver and his 12-year-old brother, a passenger, were killed in a car accident. They both rode an electric scooter without motorcycle helmets.

At night, in one of the villages of the Trans-Baikal Territory, the driver of an SUV drove into the oncoming lane, where he collided with a motorcycle driven by a 14-year-old teenager without a driver's license. The eighth-grader died, and the motorist who hit him fled the scene, abandoning the car. The police are currently looking for him.

The State Traffic Inspectorate called on parents to strictly monitor and stop attempts by children and teenagers to get behind the wheel on their own, as well as to exclude for them the possibility of accessing the keys of cars, mopeds and motorcycles, prohibiting the management of cars and motor vehicles without appropriate rights and driving skills. Lack of control over the behavior and leisure of children and adolescents, especially in the evening, often leads to injuries or deaths of young road users. Parents were reminded that administrative and criminal liability is provided for allowing children who do not have a driver's license of the appropriate category to drive vehicles.

"We also remind you that minors can drive mopeds and motorcycles on public roads no earlier than the age of 16 after completing training and obtaining a driver's license. Cross—country motorcycles and pitbikes, which are sports equipment, should be used only on specialized tracks and only for motorsport, including for young athletes. On ordinary roads, as well as in populated areas, movement with their help is strictly prohibited," said Police Colonel Sergey Hrantskevich, head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of child traffic injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

Drivers were advised to be especially collected and careful when driving through courtyards and maneuvering on them. In such places, there is a high probability of unexpected appearance of underage pedestrians or cyclists due to parked vehicles blocking the view of a maneuvering motorist.

Earlier, on April 30, it was reported that by the end of the first quarter of 2026, the number of road accidents in Moscow decreased by 16% compared to last year, and the death toll by 40%.
