Dentists warned about the connection of excess weight with the risk of tooth loss
Being overweight can significantly increase the risk of tooth loss, as obesity is often accompanied by chronic inflammatory processes in the body. These changes negatively affect the condition of the oral cavity and increase the likelihood of developing serious dental diseases. This was announced to Izvestia on May 5 by the chief physician of the Izi Stom dental clinic of the Dream Team clinic network, Jovid Zaripov.
According to him, with obesity, adipose tissue secretes substances that increase inflammation. This almost doubles the risk of periodontitis, one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults.
According to research, overweight people have fewer preserved teeth after the age of 30 compared to patients with a normal body mass index. Obesity increases the likelihood of tooth loss by about 1.5 times, and when combined with smoking, this figure more than triples.
Many patients perceive dental health separately from the general condition of the body and underestimate the alarming symptoms. Thus, bleeding gums are often ignored, although it may indicate chronic inflammation. No less dangerous are destroyed teeth and untreated roots, which become a constant source of infection.
"Tooth loss affects not only the oral cavity, but also the entire body. Impaired chewing function worsens the quality of nutrition, increases the load on the gastrointestinal tract, and in the elderly it can accelerate the loss of muscle mass, the development of general weakness and even cognitive impairment," the specialist noted.
Andrey Kiryakov, a general dentist at the RodontaDent clinic of the Dream Team network, stressed that the situation is aggravated by concomitant diseases, especially type II diabetes mellitus. With this disease, the tissues recover worse, and the inflammatory processes are more severe. In addition, excess sugar and a high-carbohydrate diet increase the risk of tooth decay, which, if left untreated, can lead to periodontal tissue damage and subsequent tooth loss.
Experts also drew attention to the impact of tooth loss on appearance. The absence of even a few teeth reduces the height of the bite, which leads to a decrease in the lower third of the face. As a result, the lips and cheeks lose their support, the skin becomes less elastic, wrinkles appear, and a person may look much older than their age.
"At the same time, timely restoration of the dentition can significantly improve the appearance. According to doctors, after prosthetics, patients often notice the effect of rejuvenation: the oval of the face is restored, wrinkles are smoothed out, facial expressions and diction improve," the doctor said.
Dentists emphasize that body weight control, timely dental treatment and prevention of inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity are important conditions for maintaining not only a beautiful smile, but also the overall quality of life.
Dentist Marina Kolesnichenko said on April 27 that brushing teeth more often than twice a day is not recommended. According to the expert, it is better to simply rinse your mouth with water after eating.: It helps to reduce acidity, stimulates saliva production and promotes natural cleansing of the oral cavity.
