The defense of Mikhail Pichugin, who was found guilty of violating the rules of operation of water transport, did not appeal the verdict. This was reported to Izvestia in court.

On April 14, a court sentenced Pichugin, who survived two months of drifting in the Sea of Okhotsk, to three years of forced labor, a fine of 40,000 rubles and withholding 10% of his salary. The verdict came into force.

According to investigators, Pichugin entered false information about the characteristics of the outboard motor into the contract of sale of the boat in July 2024. He submitted this document to the department of the GIMS Center of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in the Sakhalin region. On the basis of an invalid purchase and sale agreement, the vessel was allowed to operate.

The skipper, along with his brother and his 15-year-old son, went out on a boat to sea on August 9. The travelers were heading to the village of Moskalvo, located on the coast of Sakhalin Bay in the Okhinsky district of the Sakhalin region. They had to walk about 100 km from Cape Perovsky in the Nikolaevsky district of the Khabarovsk Territory.
