- Axios learned about the actions of the US Navy during the operation in the Strait of Hormuz
The US operation to withdraw ships through the Strait of Hormuz (Project Freedom) does not involve the mandatory escort of the merchant fleet by ships of the US Navy. This was reported on May 4 by the Axios portal, citing sources.
"According to two American officials, the new initiative in the Strait of Hormuz will not necessarily include escorting merchant vessels by US Navy ships," the publication says.
At the same time, one of the interlocutors clarified that the US warships would be "in the immediate vicinity." This can be a means of warning in case Iran decides to attack and attack ships passing through the strait.
On May 3, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States would help withdraw ships blocked due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also pointed out that the relocation of ships is intended only to free people, companies and countries that have become victims of circumstances. According to him, this gesture will be an important expression of goodwill. 15,000 military personnel may be involved in the operation.
As Trump clarified, the United States will be forced to use force if it encounters outside interference in the operation to withdraw ships from the Strait of Hormuz. He pointed out that the mission is humanitarian in nature.
In response, the head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Parliament, Ebrahim Azizi, said that the Islamic Republic would regard any US interference in navigation through the Strait of Hormuz as a violation of the ceasefire between the parties.
