Merz called Trump's new tariffs a blow to Europe
US President Donald Trump's new tariffs could be a real blow to Europe. This was stated on May 3 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in an interview with ARD TV channel.
The politician noted that the parties disagree on the issue of tariffs, but at the same time they should try to resolve the contradictions.
"We do not share the principled opinion that tariffs are a good thing, but we must recognize that America and the American government currently see the situation differently, so we must try to find solutions," the chancellor said.
During the same interview, Merz said that Germany and the United States have different views on bilateral relations, but the countries must continue to be partners and allies of each other. As the politician admitted, Trump is rightly disappointed by the incomplete preparation of the European Union (EU) for the Turnberry trade agreement, which was concluded last year. As the Chancellor pointed out, there are forces in the European Parliament that are preventing the agreement.
