In Russia, desecration of the St. George ribbon can result in criminal liability up to imprisonment. The maximum penalty in such cases is up to three years in prison, but if there are aggravating circumstances, the term may be increased to five years. This was announced on May 3 by lawyer Natalia Malinovskaya.

"It is the desecration of the St. George ribbon that is legally prohibited, which falls under Parts 3 and 4 of Articles 354.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation," Malinovskaya told TASS.

It is noted that liability is established in the form of a fine of up to 3 million rubles, compulsory labor of up to 360 hours, correctional labor of up to 1 year or forced labor of up to 3 years.

According to the lawyer, more severe sanctions are applied in cases where the offense was committed by a group of persons, an organized group, or using mass media (mass media) or the Internet. In such situations, the fine can reach 5 million rubles, and the maximum term of imprisonment is five years.

The expert stressed that even the publication of illegal materials on the Web can be considered an aggravating circumstance and lead to increased punishment.

Lawyer Malinovskaya recalled on May 2 that placing a St. George ribbon on a dog collar or a car handle could result in liability, as this is incompatible with the status of a symbol of military glory. She noted that citizens should be careful when using the St. George ribbon.

On April 22, the St. George Ribbon campaign began in Russia, in which volunteers from the Volunteers of Victory headquarters will distribute millions of ribbons to passersby in 8,000 locations across the country. The campaign is timed to coincide with Victory Day and will run until May 9th.
