- The withdrawal of part of the US troops from Germany is connected with Trump's resentment of Merz
The withdrawal of part of the US military from Germany is connected with the insult of US President Donald Trump to the words of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz that the Americans "quite obviously entered the war with Iran without any strategy." This was reported on May 2 by the newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ).
"Reaction (to Mertz's words. — Ed.) was predictable — and could cause long-term damage to German interests. Trump, without further ado, threatened to cut American troops from Germany and fulfilled his promise," the article says.
According to NZZ, Merz's mistake indicates that the German Chancellor lives by outdated ideas and underestimates Trump.
The New York Times (NYT) newspaper, citing American military officials, reported on May 2 that the decision to withdraw 5,000 American troops from Germany was a punishment for Berlin's position on Iran. According to them, Germany's unwillingness to help the United States in conducting military operations against Iran has displeased Washington. Although the Pentagon had previously considered the possibility of reducing its military presence in Germany, this step was nevertheless justified by the desire to punish Germany for criticizing the United States.
