- It became known about the transition of state universities of the Russian Federation to electronic student ID cards
Russian state universities have finally switched to electronic student ID cards. This was announced on May 3 by Andrey Omelchuk, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.
"Now every university is, in fact, obliged to transfer information to the state information system.… We have already formed almost 5 million students on the single portal of public services <...> All state universities are already there," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Omelchuk also noted that, if desired, a student can receive a paper student ID, however, according to the deputy minister, this practice will be abandoned in the next few years.
"I think that in the next two to three years, everyone will understand that digital student education is more convenient, practical and efficient," Omelchuk concluded.
Sergei Mironov, chairman of the Fair Russia party, said on May 1 that the rising prices of tuition at Russian universities, reaching 30% per year, makes higher education difficult for citizens to access. The parliamentarian believes that the first higher education for Russian citizens should be completely free.
