Commemorative events dedicated to Victory Day will be held in Iceland. This was announced on May 2 by the Russian Embassy in Reykjavik.

"The Russian Embassy in Iceland annually organizes wreath-laying ceremonies dedicated to Victory Day at the Fossvogur city cemetery at the Nadezhda Memorial in memory of sailors participating in Arctic convoys, as well as at the graves of Soviet sailor Alexander Maley and World War II veteran Maria Mitrofanova," RIA Novosti quoted the diplomats as saying.".

The embassy said that this year's memorial ceremony dedicated to the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War will be held on May 9. Within the framework of the event, the traditional "Immortal Regiment" campaign will be organized, which will be attended by compatriots living in Iceland.

"As part of the event, the rector of the St. Nicholas parish of the Russian Orthodox Church in Reykjavik, Archpriest Timofey Zolotusky, will serve a requiem mass for those who died on the battlefields," the diplomatic mission told the agency.

At a May Day rally in the town of Banovce nad Bebravou, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that the Red Army soldiers had ensured 81 years of peace and tranquility in Europe with their feat. He noted that out of gratitude to the fighters, he would go to Moscow to participate in events dedicated to their memory.
