The court arrested criminal boss Merab Dzhangveladze, also known as Merab Sukhumsky, in absentia because of his high position in the criminal hierarchy. This was reported on April 30 in the press service of the Tverskoy District Court.

"The Tverskoy District Court of Moscow has chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention in respect of Dzhangveladze for a period of two months from the moment of his transfer to law enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation in case of extradition or deportation to the territory of the Russian Federation or from the moment of his actual detention on the territory of the Russian Federation," RIA Novosti reports.

It is noted that the decision on the arrest in absentia was made in the framework of a criminal case initiated under Article 210.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Occupying the highest position in the criminal hierarchy"). He faces a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.

The day before, Dzhangveladze was put on the international wanted list. According to law enforcement officials, Dzhangveladze was "crowned" a thief in law in 1985. The investigation believes that the unspoken status of a criminal authority allows him to control the activities of criminal structures in Russia from abroad.
