Online scammers can attack owners of suburban areas against the background of the summer holiday season, experts have warned about this. Malefactors take advantage of the demand for various goods and services for country houses and integrate these prepositions into numerous schemes. For more information about how online scammers attack Russian summer residents, how dangerous their tricks are and how to protect yourself from them, read the Izvestia article.

Why is the theme of the holiday season interesting to scammers

Goods for cottages and suburban areas are in stable demand and have a pronounced spring peak of interest — scammers know this and update their deception schemes every year for the season, says Sergey Zolotukhin, cybersecurity consultant at F6, in an interview with Izvestia.

— Attackers use a variety of ways to make a "unique offer" to summer residents: from fake online stores and free ads on popular sites to marketplaces and messages in country chat rooms and communities, - says the expert. — For example, they advertise "discounts" on generators, pumps, filters and other necessary equipment through chat rooms, distributing links to phishing resources.

The subject of goods and services for cottages attracts Internet scammers not only by seasonality, but also by specificity (as a rule, it is the older generation) and emotional involvement of the audience, adds Marina Probets, an Internet analyst and expert at Gazinformservice. In the spring and summer period, there is a surge in demand for seedlings, seeds, fertilizers, gardening tools and landscaping services, which is another reason to cash in on the gullible population.

Many summer residents, especially the older generation, may be less savvy in cybersecurity issues, and also tend to trust "expert advice" or promises of exclusive varieties and record harvests, the Izvestia interlocutor notes. In addition, we are often talking about products that are difficult to evaluate from a photo or description before receiving, which gives scammers space to work.

What schemes on the topic of the summer season to expect in 2026

With the onset of the summer cottage season in 2026, we should expect an increase in the number of schemes related to the repair of communications in the farming co-op after the winter season, as well as an increase in the number of notifications with phishing links about fines allegedly for improper land management or campfires, experts predict MTS Defender service.

"With the development of artificial intelligence, cybercriminals have succeeded in creating fake images that are used to create images of non—existent plants, the "seedlings" of which are distributed through marketplaces," notes Sergey Zolotukhin. — A striking example is the "miracle tree", a hybrid of raspberries and strawberries, whose fruits "combine the external signs of raspberries with the taste of strawberries and blackberries."

There is no such plant in nature, and it is impossible to breed it as a hybrid, according to breeding scientists. But on marketplaces they ask for several hundred rubles for seedlings. It is not known what will grow as a result, but hardly anyone will sue the seller years later — that's the calculation. Therefore, in 2026, there is a peak in offers for the sale of "seedlings" of such "miracle plants" in online stores, the expert explains.

Marina Probets also believes that attackers will actively use AI technologies to create hyper-realistic images and videos of non-existent or heavily embellished goods, as well as to generate fake reviews and video reviews from "satisfied customers."

—Personalized phishing campaigns may appear offering exclusive "smart" solutions for cottages (for example, automatic irrigation systems with AI, which in fact will turn out to be just a screen for collecting data or selling useless equipment),— admits the Izvestia interlocutor. — It is also possible to create schemes using deepfakes, where "famous gardeners" or "experts" will recommend fraudulent products or services, adding credibility and credibility to deception.

What schemes have you encountered before on the topic of the summer season?

Meanwhile, malefactors have been trying to use various schemes to deceive Russians with the onset of the holiday season for several years. In particular, according to experts of the MTS Defender service, in the spring they traditionally increase the number of calls related to goods for the garden and vegetable garden. Scammers offer country goods at "special prices", as well as their services in preparing equipment for the summer and autumn season.

Previously, there were other fraudulent schemes exploiting the country theme on the Web, says Marina Probets.

—The classic options included the creation of single-page online stores offering seedlings of rare varieties or miraculous fertilizers at significantly reduced prices, requiring full prepayment, after which the goods were not shipped or arrived in poor condition," she says.

In addition, according to the interlocutor of Izvestia, "cats in a bag" were often sold — instead of the declared plants, other, cheaper or even weeds came. Schemes with "sweepstakes" and "contests" were also common, where in order to receive a "prize" (for example, an expensive greenhouse) it was necessary to pay a small commission or delivery, after which the victim received nothing.

At the same time, the category of "summer residents", contrary to the popular opinion that gardening and gardening are the lot of people of retirement age, are characterized by confident solvency, Sergei Zolotukhin draws attention. The fact is that the owners of cottages and luxury suburban real estate are also interested in the "country" range. They are ready to buy goods of various categories, from expensive machinery to seedlings of exotic plants that no one else in the area has, regardless of costs. That's why fraudulent ads find their buyer.

How to protect yourself from "suburban" fraud schemes

In order to protect yourself from fraud schemes by the summer season, experts interviewed by Izvestia advise following certain safety rules. In particular, experts from the MTS Defender service remind that government agencies do not send links to pay fines via SMS, and private companies do not sell by phone without signing a contract.

"When communicating by phone or in messengers, it is important not to follow links from suspicious messages, always double—check information through official sources, and also tell your loved ones about current threats, especially elderly relatives," experts recommend.

In turn, Sergey Zolotukhin urges to be critical of messages and ads that promise "unique discounts", as well as goods at prices significantly lower than market prices. Even if such a message appeared in the chat, remember: scammers can easily join such groups using an open invitation link and disguise themselves as a neighbor, or even spread fake messages from a hacked account.

— If in the picture in the ad you see clusters of currants hanging from a two—meter tree, raspberries the size of a good carrot or strawberries the size of a palm, do not believe your eyes, — the expert emphasizes. — Take a closer look at the pictures. The work of artificial intelligence is characterized by a pattern: bright berries — one to one, as if made of plastic.

Avoid offers that seem "too good to be true" or burning, pay attention if you are driven by emotions and impulsive decision-making, especially with a significant discount on exclusive products, adds Marina Probets. Preference should be given to well-known and trusted marketplaces or nurseries with a physical address and a good history.

Beware of making a full prepayment for the product if you are not sure about the seller, and if possible, use secure payment methods that protect the buyer. And also, never follow suspicious links from messages and do not download files from unverified sources, concludes the Izvestia interlocutor.
