Fico confirmed his intention to meet with Putin during his visit to Moscow on May 9.
On April 30, Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Robert Fico confirmed his intention to arrive in Moscow to celebrate Victory Day, and also stated that he intends to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"I'm going to a meeting with the President of Russia, which will take place on May 9," he said as part of his conversation with students from Ruzhomberok, a recording of which was posted on the government's YouTube channel.
The Prime Minister of Slovakia said that this decision was criticized by a number of his European colleagues. In this regard, he stressed that anyone can approach him and explain why he allegedly should cancel the trip.
"Before that, everyone criticized me, and when I return after meeting with Putin, everyone is on the sidelines of Brussels (where the headquarters of the European Union is located). - Ed.) they ask me what he said," said Fico.
Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed a day earlier that the Slovak prime minister would arrive in Moscow for the Victory Day Parade, held in honor of the celebration on May 9. Within a month, the Fico aircraft was banned from using its airspace to fly to Russia by Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
On April 22, Slovak Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak, commenting on the same ban in Poland, said that Fico would fly to Russia to participate in the Victory Day Parade, regardless of Warsaw. Lyubosh Blaga, a member of the European Parliament from Slovakia, in turn promised the states a response for their unwillingness to provide their sky.
