The zoopsychologist named the reasons for the cats' detached behavior
Independent behavior of cats and their selective reaction to attention does not mean a lack of attachment to the owner. This behavior is related to the natural instincts and characteristics of the species, Oksana Yershova, a zoopsychologist and expert at SUPERPET, a natural food manufacturer, told Izvestia on May 4.
"Domestic cats are evolutionarily independent animals. In the natural environment, they form groups only in exceptional situations when it comes to survival. That is why they are characterized by independence and self—sufficiency, and the lack of an instant reaction to the owner should not be perceived as a manifestation of dislike," the specialist explained.
She noted that even the most contact pets are not always ready to interact. Cats use energy sparingly and rarely respond without a good reason. At the same time, they can react instantly if they understand that the interaction will be followed by a treat or other stimulus.
Another reason for "ignoring" is that cats require significantly less communication than humans. They prefer to interact in a measured manner and value respect for personal boundaries. Obsessive attention, frequent attempts to pick up a pet, or excessive physical affection can, on the contrary, alienate the animal.
To build a trusting relationship, the zoopsychologist recommends not to impose contact. According to her, the calmer the owner behaves, the more willing the cat is to take the initiative in communication.
At the same time, a sudden change in behavior should alert the owner. If the pet has always been sociable and then started avoiding contact, stress, fear, or health problems may be the cause. In such cases, the specialist advises that you first consult a veterinarian to rule out medical reasons.
Yershova emphasized that, like humans, all cats have different temperaments: some need constant communication, others prefer to keep their distance. Respecting a pet's personality traits helps make a relationship more trusting.
On April 15, veterinarians of the State Veterinary Service compiled a guide on how to arrange a happy life for a pet. Experts recommended keeping scales in the kitchen for precise control of food portions, as well as two bowls for water and food. Special brushes should be provided for hair care.
