- The Finnish politician recalled that the country had no plans for nuclear weapons before joining NATO.
The issue of deploying nuclear weapons in Finland was not raised before the country joined NATO. This was announced on April 30 by Finnish politician Armando Mema, a member of the Freedom Alliance party.
"Before joining NATO, the idea of deploying nuclear weapons was ruled out, but after Finland joined NATO, it suddenly became a priority," he told RIA Novosti.
He added that the main proponent of the idea of deploying such weapons is the country's president, Alexander Stubb. According to Mema, this course is a historic shift in the state's foreign policy.
On April 23, the Finnish Ministry of Defense announced that the government had submitted to parliament a proposal to allow the import and storage of nuclear weapons for the purpose of defending the country within the framework of cooperation with NATO. At the same time, the acquisition, production, development and research of nuclear weapons in the country will be prohibited.
In March, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that NATO's aggressive aspirations against Russia continue to expand. She stressed that Moscow had tried all the ways to establish relations with NATO, but with no result. The alliance is concerned about only one thing — inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia. Prior to that, Zakharova also noted that NATO is strengthening and increasing its nuclear potential, which it can use in a potential conflict against the Russian Federation.
