The Kereki people are recognized as the smallest indigenous people of Russia — their number is only 23 people. This was announced on April 30 by the press service of the Federal Agency for Nationalities (FADN).

"There are 23 Kereks," the FADN reported in an interview with TASS.

In June 2025, the head of the FADN, Igor Barinov, spoke about the new Strategy for Ethnic Affairs until 2030. The document reflects the current challenges and threats facing the country. Among them are information and psychological influence from the outside and migration processes, which became especially acute after the start of the special military operation.
