In the Murmansk region, the investigation of the criminal case on the death of two women in a fire caused by the arson of a sofa in a neighboring apartment has been completed. This is reported by the regional prosecutor's office.

The person involved in the case is an 85-year-old resident of the urban-type settlement of Umba. The investigation believes that on January 25, she set fire to the sofa in her apartment on Sovetskaya Street, after which she left the premises.

During the fire, heavy smoke arose, which spread to adjacent apartments. The 76-year-old and 53-year-old neighbors of the elderly arsonist died from acute carbon monoxide poisoning.

As it turned out, the pensioner suffers from a chronic mental illness, as a result of which she could not realize the danger of her actions. The prosecutor's office intends to obtain compulsory medical treatment for her.

According to Bi-port news agency, a criminal case was initially opened under paragraph "a" of Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation "Murder of two persons", but later it was reclassified to the article on causing death by negligence (Part 3 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code). Currently, the materials of the criminal case have been submitted to the court for consideration on the merits.

On March 30, a fire was reported in one of the villages of Buryatia, the cause of which, according to the preliminary version, was arson. As a result, a man died.
