Anastasia Cardiakos, a family psychologist, explained why people prefer to keep quiet about their feelings and what it can mean.

In an interview with Radio 1 on Wednesday, April 29, the expert noted that the refusal to express feelings is almost always associated with deep fears. One of them is the fear of "drowning" in emotions: a person fears that by giving them a way out, he will lose control. However, according to her, psychophysiology says the opposite — suppression increases feelings, while their expression, on the contrary, reduces the intensity.

The psychologist also pointed out the fear of looking weak or "toxic": because of the fear of condemnation, people suppress even natural emotions, accumulating tension. Another reason is the attitudes from childhood, when they could be shamed for showing feelings. In adulthood, this creates the belief that real emotions will make a person "unacceptable" to others.

The expert emphasized that emotions need to be released, and their suppression can lead to anxiety, apathy, irritability, as well as physical manifestations such as muscle cramps, headaches, and gastrointestinal problems. This also affects relationships: it becomes more difficult to talk about boundaries, resentment and emotional coldness appear.

According to her, in order to learn how to express feelings, it is important to first notice and realize them, then name them and only after that live and express them.

Earlier in April, psychologist Elena Kuznetsova revealed how to manage emotions. According to her, it is not necessary for a modern person to live in constant stress: emotions are often the result of distorted mental attitudes that can be corrected. 360.ru . She advised using sanogenic thinking.

In November, psychologist Maria Aganina recommended watching videos with animals to reduce stress. According to her, in the modern rhythm of life, work and study, the brain sometimes needs a short break, according to the Moscow City News agency.

In August, psychosomatologist Ekaterina Tur explained how to sort out her feelings and emotions. She noted that an emotion is usually short-lived, whereas a feeling lasts longer because it is a state.
