The Bolshoy Smolensky Bridge in St. Petersburg is ready for shipping. This is the first new drawbridge in the city in more than 40 years. This was announced on April 29 on the website of the city administration.

"The most important thing is that the bridge has passed its first test: on the night of April 24-25, the first ship was escorted. Today we checked once again how the draw mechanisms and wings of this bridge work," said Alexander Beglov, Governor of St. Petersburg.

According to him, two wings weighing more than 600 tons each are mounted on the bridge. The work of the adjustable span is provided by eight domestic hydraulic cylinders manufactured at the Obukhov plant.

It is specified that in 2027 it is planned to open a working movement, and in 2028 the bridge will be connected to the city's road network. The width of the navigable span will be 60 m, which will be the widest double—winged swing span in St. Petersburg.

Beglov noted on March 31 that the construction of the Bolshoy Smolensky Bridge was ahead of schedule. According to him, the construction of another drawbridge across the Neva River will begin in the summer. The statement was made during a videoconference with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Later, on April 27, Putin held a personal meeting with Beglov. The governor informed her that the city was expanding its transport infrastructure, and five new drawbridges were being built, one of which, Bolshoy Smolensky, had already been navigated for the first time.
