Russians' spending on used cars in March was a record since the beginning of the year

By the end of March this year, Russians purchased 475,000 used cars, spending 568.4 billion rubles on them. This is 14% more than in February, and the highest result since the beginning of 2026. In total, at the end of the quarter, the financial capacity of the secondary market amounted to 1.58 trillion rubles, which is 12% more year-on-year. This was reported on April 29 by the Autostat agency with reference to a joint study with Gazprombank Autoleasing.

According to experts, Russians spend the most money on cars aged 10 years and older. In March, they spent 231.6 billion rubles (40.7% of the total amount). In the sales structure, the leadership also belongs to the "old" cars — in March they sold 332.4 thousand units, which is 70% of the entire secondary market.

At the same time, European brands are leading in terms of costs in the secondary market with a result of 197 billion rubles in March, which is 18% more than a month earlier. Almost identical amounts were spent on used cars of Russian and Chinese brands (51.3 billion and 50.7 billion rubles, respectively). In terms of sales, Japanese used cars are the leaders — 128.5 thousand units in March.

More than half of the total amount in March was spent on crossovers and SUVs — 295.4 billion rubles, which is 52% of all funds spent. At the same time, in the rating by car class, cars with B-class mileage remain the leader in terms of sales volumes — 160.3 thousand units per month.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that if in 2014 the average price of a new passenger car was 1.2 million rubles, by now it has reached 3.79 million rubles. Thus, in 12 years, new cars have more than tripled in price (+216%). Prices for used cars increased in the same way during this period (+210%) — from 435 thousand to 1.35 million rubles.
