The Chernobyl disaster was one of the few, but far from the last major incident at nuclear power plants. Each such case is subjected to a thorough analysis and leads to a change in the current rules. For example, the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan caused a global review of approaches to nuclear energy safety. This was announced by Alexander Bystrikov, Deputy Director of the NPP Operation Department.

He recalled that the disaster occurred due to a combination of natural factors and the failure of cooling systems.

"Thus, the accident showed that the design safety standards may be insufficient when encountering extreme natural phenomena," the expert emphasized.

According to him, the consequences have led to stricter requirements for the infrastructure of the stations. "As a result, Fukushima forced the world to reconsider its approaches to protection and increase the requirements for backup power sources and independent cooling systems," Bystrikov said.

The expert added that nuclear energy remains an area of high risk and requires constant improvement. "On the contrary, we should strive every day to improve technology and do everything necessary to ensure security," he concluded.
