South Korea's ex-president Yoon Seok-yeol was given tougher punishment.
South Korea's court of appeal has sentenced former President Yoon Seok-young to seven years in prison on charges of obstructing investigators who tried to execute an arrest warrant. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on April 29.
The arrest warrant for Yun was issued in connection with the imposition of martial law in December 2024 after the president ordered the launch of drones into the territory of the DPRK. The Court of Appeal made the decision during a televised hearing.
This is the first decision issued by a special judicial unit established to deal with cases related to the JNA's attempt to impose martial law.
On February 19, a court in South Korea sentenced former President Yoon Seok-yong to life imprisonment. It was clarified that the former head of state was found guilty of leading the rebellion in 2024.
Yoon Seok-young was arrested on January 15, 2025 in a corruption case, which was an unprecedented case when investigative authorities detained a person who ruled the state. Later, the president was taken into custody, which caused discontent among his supporters, who staged pogroms in the country.
