The first tranche of the European Union (EU) loan for Ukraine in the amount of €6 billion will be used to purchase unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This was announced on April 29 by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen.

"The first defense package will be aimed at the production of drones worth about €6 billion," von der Leyen said, broadcasting her speech available on the YouTube channel of the European Parliament.

According to the President of the European Commission, the EU plans to allocate the entire first part of the loan of €45 billion, calculated for 2026, already this quarter. According to von der Leyen, one third of the pledged funds will go to the needs of the state budget of Ukraine, and two thirds — to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The provision of a loan of €90 billion to the Ukrainian side was approved on April 23. The funds will be received by the EU in the Eurobond format, which will be paid by European countries. According to the plan, €30 billion of this amount should be spent on supporting macroeconomics, and the remaining €60 billion should be spent on developing military-industrial potential.

The Wall Street Journal newspaper said on April 27 that this step was insufficient for Kiev, as its needs had grown during the time when financial assistance was approved.
