Orthopedic traumatologists talked about the risk of spinal injuries in nature
Outdoor recreation — whether it's a cottage, picnic, or active tourism — carries significant risks for the spine, especially after a long winter without physical exertion. Heavy bends are the most dangerous, especially for the elderly, Andrey Konovalov, an orthopedic traumatologist of the highest category, told Izvestia.
"When a person bends forward, a front wedge is created. In older people, this can lead to a compression fracture on the background of osteoporosis: the spine seems to "fold" in the anterior region," the doctor noted.
He recalled that the May holidays traditionally mark the beginning of the gardening season, and people tend to lift weights after a long break.
"Improper lifting can lead to the formation of a herniated disc with characteristic symptoms — "lumbago" in the leg. In the common people, this is called sciatica or sciatica, when the sciatic nerve begins to manifest itself," Konovalov said.
No less dangerous are sharp twisting of the body with a load, jerky movements, prolonged work in a bent position without interruptions, as well as unsuccessful jumps and falls, Daniil Efimov, an orthopedic traumatologist and head of the trauma department of the Murmansk Regional Clinical Multidisciplinary Center, told Izvestia.
According to the expert, if a person already has back problems, the risk of injury increases even with ordinary everyday movements. To reduce it, the specialist recommended avoiding sudden movements, turning your whole body, not just your lower back, doing warm-ups before physical exertion, wearing comfortable shoes and avoiding hypothermia if possible.
Lifting weights, according to him, should be done at the expense of the legs, not the back. Andrey Konovalov, for his part, shared how to do it.:
"If the knee joints allow, you should sit down deeply, pull your pelvis back as far as possible, press the load to yourself and rise with it," he said.
The doctor also advised learning how to fall properly — not on outstretched arms or a "fifth point", but grouped on the side.
Earlier, Ekaterina Kashukh, a gastroenterologist and expert at the Hemotest Laboratory, told Izvestia what risks are associated with buying a ready-made barbecue.
