- Cardiologist called dangerous symptoms after working in the garden and vegetable garden
For many Russians, the May holidays are associated with trips to the country and the beginning of work in the garden. However, intense physical activity, to which the body has become unaccustomed over the winter, can lead to unpleasant consequences — from ordinary fatigue and overheating to more serious health problems. Branislav Bogunovich, a cardiologist and deputy chief physician of the Intermedcenter clinic, told Izvestia about how to notice dangerous symptoms in time and not harm yourself while working at the site.
According to the expert, the elderly are primarily at risk, as well as those with chronic diseases such as hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, joint and spine diseases. The doctor noted that, for example, with osteoarthritis and other joint lesions, the work on the site itself often turns out to be too difficult.
"Any load, squatting with osteoarthritis or gonarthrosis (knee joint disease) leads to the fact that a person simply will not be able to work properly, so summer residents will limit themselves to those loads that they cannot tolerate," the specialist explained.
For people who have previously experienced back and lower back pain, the situation also requires attention. As the doctor emphasized, lifting weights and working in uncomfortable positions can provoke an exacerbation of spinal diseases. A characteristic feature is shooting pain, which appears during movement or exertion and can seriously limit mobility.
Working in the open sun is also associated with risks. Overheating can cause headaches, dizziness, weakness, and general deterioration of well-being. In such conditions, it is important to avoid working during the hottest hours of the day, wear hats and choose light, breathable clothing.
"People with hypertension and heart diseases should be especially careful. Intense physical activity is contraindicated for them, regardless of weather conditions," added Branislav Bogunovich.
Separately, the specialist focused on the symptoms for which it is necessary to immediately stop working. These include sudden weakness, pressure spikes, dizziness, palpitations, and shortness of breath. If such signs appear, it is necessary to stop immediately, and if they persist, seek medical help.
The doctor stressed that during summer work it is important to be attentive to your condition and not ignore the body's alarm signals.
"You have to listen to yourself. There are people who set a goal to dig up the entire site and work until they reach it. But it's better to listen to your condition, take rest breaks and drink more fluids," he said.
The specialist also recommended checking the first-aid kit in advance and updating it if necessary. It should contain wound treatment products such as iodine, patches, and blood pressure medications such as Nifedipine or Captopril. At the same time, he reminded that any medications should be taken taking into account the recommendations of the attending physician.
Earlier, Izvestia told how country work affects a person's psychoemotional state.
