Auto experts warned about the risks when buying used tires
Used tires, even if they look like new ones, may have hidden defects that in some cases cannot be detected by visual inspection. During further operation of such tires, vibration during movement and other problems may occur, up to an explosion of the tire during movement as a result of a sudden loss of pressure, which can lead to an accident. Experts of the Cordiant holding told Izvestia about this on April 28.
"It may be advisable to purchase non-new tires in rare cases, for example, when it is necessary to purchase one or two tires for an already worn-out set in order to finish the season. Or if there are no new tires of a rare standard size in the range," the company said.
It is noted that tires usually retain their characteristics for at least a warranty period (five years) under ideal storage conditions and proper operation. After this conditional threshold has expired, a number of consumer properties may decrease. At the same time, there are cases of successful operation of tires aged five, 10 and more years.
However, it is recommended to pay special attention to tires older than five years when purchasing them. Storage in direct sunlight, in high stacks, or in close proximity to heat sources is especially harmful to tires.
When buying used tires, it is required to visually evaluate each tire — the tread, sidewalls, side areas, and interior. There should be no external defects on the tire. At first glance, minor damage during an attempt at repair may turn out to be irreparable.
Some tire defects, including violations of the geometric integrity and the tire frame, can often be detected only on inflated tires. Therefore, when examining used tires, it is highly advisable to mount them on discs and diagnose them on a balancing stand, making sure, among other things, that the wheel assembly does not have runout in the lateral and radial planes, experts advised.
"It is better to abandon tires with any repairs, since the quality of these works is unknown, and tires can be dangerous during further operation. It is also worth noting the acceptable tread residue: legally, for summer tires it should be at least 1.6 mm, for winter tires — 4 mm. In practice, tires worn to these values should not be considered, since their traction properties are greatly reduced relative to new ones, especially when driving on wet roads," the experts said.
On April 17, auto experts said that as the tire wears out, its resistance to aquaplaning decreases significantly. For example, when driving on a road in heavy rain at 60 km/h, heavily worn tires resist aquaplaning twice as well as new ones, which significantly increases the risk of loss of grip.
