Psychologist warned about the risks of working without rest
Regular work without proper rest can lead to serious health problems and the accumulation of chronic stress. Olga Kushnareva, a family psychologist and psychotherapist, told Izvestia about this on April 28.
According to her, rest is not an additional option, but a basic function of the body's recovery. In its absence, systemic tension begins to accumulate, which is first manifested by irritability, decreased concentration, and sleep problems.
"Rest is not a bonus, but a basic recovery function. When he is not there, a person does not just get tired, he begins to accumulate systemic tension," Kushnareva emphasized.
The expert noted that chronic fatigue, emotional burnout and decreased immunity develop during prolonged overloads. First of all, the nervous system suffers, which works without a pause for recovery.
According to the expert, hormonal disorders are then involved, including increased cortisol levels, which affects sleep, appetite and general well-being. The load on the cardiovascular system also increases, which can be manifested by pressure surges and palpitations.
Kushnareva added that prolonged absence of rest increases the risk of developing chronic diseases, including hypertension, metabolic disorders, anxiety and depression. The expert emphasized that many people do not notice the moment of exhaustion and get used to a state of constant fatigue. However, there are signs that indicate an overload.
"Constant fatigue that does not go away even after sleep, irritability, problems with memory and concentration, frequent colds, the feeling that "there is no strength at all for anything." This is not just an overload, but a signal that resources are running out," she said.
According to the specialist, after intensive work, it is important to take time to fully recover, and not limit yourself to short-term rest. This includes reducing stress, normalizing sleep, and doing mild physical activity.
Kushnareva added that there is no safe level of overwork, as the key factor remains the balance between workload and recovery. When it is violated, the body eventually begins to react with a deterioration in health. The expert stressed that, especially after 30-35 years of age, the effects of overloads appear faster, so it is important to respond to body signals in a timely manner and not ignore the need for rest.
On April 7, Roman Yerkhov, CEO of TuBi recruiting company, told Izvestia that the decrease in employee productivity is more often associated not with personal qualities, but with the peculiarities of the management system. According to the expert, the laziness of employees in most cases is a manifestation of procrastination, burnout or low engagement. The reasons for postponing tasks are lack of clear goals, lack of feedback, and loss of meaning in the work.
