The European Union (EU) has suffered a "political failure" after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's statements about possible concessions from Ukraine, Armando Mema, a member of the Finnish national conservative Freedom Alliance party, said on April 28.

"We have been told for years that such a solution cannot be. <...> Now that the war with Iran is seriously undermining the logistics of Ukraine's air defense, the position of EU leaders is beginning to change. At some point, we will have to negotiate," the politician wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

In addition, Mema called the offer of EU membership to Ukraine as a reciprocal step in exchange for concessions a political failure and Europe's greatest mistake in recent decades.

Merz said on April 27 that in order for Ukraine to join the European Union, it may have to accept that part of its territory may remain outside Kiev's control as part of a future peace agreement with Russia. He also said that in order for Ukraine to join the EU as soon as possible, President Vladimir Zelensky will need to hold a referendum, which will raise the issue of the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) from the new territories of the Russian Federation occupied by them.
