The veterinarian called deadly products for cats and dogs
A number of products familiar to humans can pose a serious threat to the health of cats and dogs. Elena Frolenko, a veterinarian and expert at SUPERPET, a natural food manufacturer, told Izvestia on May 1.
The specialist stressed that some products have toxic effects and can cause severe poisoning in animals. According to her, chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which negatively affect the nervous and cardiovascular systems of animals. This can lead to tremors, seizures, and a small amount of dark chocolate can be deadly. The expert also noted that grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure.
"The first symptoms are similar to ordinary poisoning, but then the urine stops. Even one grape can lead to a serious condition," Frolenko added.
She pointed out that onions and garlic contain substances that can cause hemolytic anemia. The deterioration may not occur immediately, but after a few days.
Sugar-free sweets containing xylitol are also dangerous. According to the expert, this substance can cause acute liver failure. The doctor stressed that nuts, due to their high fat content, can provoke pancreatitis, and avocados contain the toxin persin, which can cause poisoning and heart failure.
"The best rule is not to feed your pet from the table at all. Even if the product is not included in this list, it may be too fatty, salty, or simply unusual for the animal's digestion. Choose special natural treats for animals or safe vegetables and fruits after consulting with a veterinarian," Frolenko concluded.
On April 15, veterinarians of the State Veterinary Service compiled a guide on how to arrange a happy life for a pet. Experts recommended keeping scales in the kitchen for precise control of food portions, as well as two bowls for water and food. Special brushes should be provided for hair care.
