- The Russian Academy of Sciences commented on the release of dolphins on the Black Sea coast
Most of the dead cetaceans were most likely washed up on the Black Sea coast by winter storms. This was announced on April 28 by Varvara Levitskaya, a junior researcher at the Marine Mammal Laboratory of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and an expert at the Nature and People Foundation.
"The fact is that if you don't specifically inspect the shore, then they (dolphins. — Ed.) no one sees or counts. The season is ending, and few people walk along the shore. Most of the dead dolphins that we found were washed up, most likely, by winter storms," she said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Dolphins most often die at sea, and their dead are already washed ashore, so in order to understand the real scale of mortality, it is necessary to conduct regular special inspections of the coast, the expert noted.
The Black Sea dolphin, which had been in the fresh water of the Beisug River in the Kuban for a long time, was rescued by specialists on September 18. The operation was observed by local residents, some of them helped by volunteers and experts from the Delphi Scientific and Ecological Dolphin Rescue Center.
