The United States and Iran continue to conduct behind-the-scenes negotiations on a peaceful settlement, the first stage of which may be an agreement to return to the pre-war status quo and resume free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported on April 27 by CNN.

"Intensive diplomatic work continues behind the scenes, and ongoing negotiations are focused on a step-by—step process in which the first part of a potential agreement will focus on returning to the pre-war status quo and reopening the Strait of Hormuz without restrictions and duties," the publication says.

It is noted that the issue of the Iranian nuclear program will have to be considered later. At the same time, during the negotiations, diplomatic mediators exert pressure on both sides. There is also a risk that the United States may decide to resume hostilities.

The Wall Street Journal newspaper reported on the same day that US President Donald Trump was skeptical about Iran's proposal for three-stage negotiations. According to officials, the United States will continue to negotiate with Iran, with the White House likely to present its response and counterproposals in the coming days.
