- The political scientist assessed the likelihood of an energy crisis in the European Union
The energy crisis in the European Union (EU) is already growing, and the policy of US President Donald Trump is only exacerbating the crisis phenomena, and there is no favorable scenario for the eurozone in which it could advocate an independent economic policy. This opinion was expressed by political scientist Ivan Mezyuho on Monday, April 27.
"The European Union got a tariff war with the United States and was even more dependent on American energy cooperation. The icing on the cake was the Iranian crisis, which affected global trade, and Europe will continue to overcome its consequences for a long time," Mezyuho said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
According to the expert, if the EU had pursued a balanced foreign policy, it would not have deprived itself of Russian energy resources, would not have allowed the explosions of the Nord Streams and the shutdown of the Druzhba oil pipeline, which Ukraine can block at any time to blackmail the EU, he believes.
If there were brave leaders inside the EU, they would immediately establish contacts with Russia and conclude profitable deals in energy, agriculture and other vital areas, Mezyuho said.
"But the EU's political elite will continue to degrade. The crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has only shown this degradation and short—sightedness of the leaders of the European continent," the political scientist concluded.
Earlier it was reported that the EU imposed a new ban on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) on April 25 — the restriction affected the import of the resource under short-term contracts, RT reports.
Slovakia has filed a lawsuit against the European Union's decision to stop importing Russian gas, according to the website. kp.ru .
It is noted that according to the regulations, LNG imports from the Russian Federation will cease no later than January 1, 2027, and pipeline gas no later than November 1, 2027, clarifies Life.Ru . Slovakia has a contract with Russia for gas supplies until 2034. Now the raw materials are supplied through Turkey and other countries, the newspaper said.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on April 22 that the republic would not support a new package of sanctions against Russia until the Druzhba oil pipeline was reopened. According to him, trust has been violated between Slovakia and Ukraine.
Fico also intends to hold a personal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in May during his visit to the Victory Day Parade in Moscow. It is expected that the leaders of the countries will discuss oil and gas supplies at the meeting.
