Car service stations reported an increase in complaints about rapid brake wear

In recent years, the number of car owners' complaints about the rapid wear of brake pads has increased significantly in Russia. So, if earlier the kit could withstand 40-50 thousand km, today it often requires replacement by 30 thousand km. Nikita Rodionov, technical director of the international franchise network of car service centers, told about this on April 27.

According to the expert, one of the reasons for this trend is the choice of components. Now there are inexpensive, non-certified brake pads and fakes for well-known brands on the market. As a result, for motorists, savings on pads result in higher costs for restoring the entire braking system, he pointed out.

"It is clear that the price reduction here is achieved due to a softer or unstable friction material. Such products provide subjectively comfortable "soft" braking, but at the same time they are intensively erased and often damage the working surface of the disc, forming furrows and steps on it. In the future, this requires either turning the disk or replacing it prematurely," Rossiyskaya Gazeta quotes Rodionov as saying.

In addition, one of the reasons for accelerated wear of pads is often the operating mode and a combination of factors such as urban driving in traffic jams, frequent acceleration and sudden braking. In regions with hilly terrain and prolonged descents, the load on the front brakes increases many times, and the service life of both pads and discs is almost halved, the specialist said.

The expert also noted that most drivers underestimate the importance of the technical condition of the brake calipers and guides. So, in the absence of regular maintenance, the guides turn sour, the caliper loses mobility, and the shoe partially wedges, remaining in contact with the disc even when the brake pedal is released, which accelerates wear.

Earlier that day, experts said that April was the most visited month in car service stations in 2025, whereas five years earlier, the record high in the number of visits was recorded in October. The traditions of seasonal car maintenance in Russia have been preserved, but peak demand has shifted from autumn to spring.
