Experts compared the prices of used cars from dealers and private traders
The prices of popular cars older than 10 years at dealers in Russia turned out to be 25% lower than those of private sellers. On average, car dealerships' offers for cars in similar condition are 2% cheaper than for individuals. On April 28, experts from Avto told Izvestia about this.<url> Business", which has studied ads for the sale of cars of comparable quality from dealers and private owners over the past six months.
For each dealer offer, the service's analysts selected ads from private dealers of the same model and generation with minimal difference in age, mileage, number of accidents and owners, compared them and calculated the median price ratio of dealers and private sellers.
In the final ranking of cars that dealers offer significantly cheaper, the top three were the Honda CR-V III (2006-2009), Hyundai Elantra IV (2006-2011) and Hyundai Sonata IV (2001-2012). Their dealer prices are on average 28% lower than those advertised by private sellers. The top five models were supplemented by the Ford Mondeo IV (2006-2010), which has a 26% lower dealer price, and the Volvo XC60 I (2008-2013) with a 24% price difference.
Among models under the age of seven, the Skoda Rapid II (2020-2023) costs an average of 6% lower at dealers in comparable quality. Volkswagen Polo VI (2020-2022) — by 5%. Hyundai Solaris II (2020-2022) and Kia Rio IV (2020-2022) are 3% cheaper at dealers, and Kia K5 (from 2019/ K5 III) — by 2%.
"Private traders' prices for popular good-quality models are often higher than dealers' prices, as private sellers focus on the shortage of new cars and their high cost. Also, most often individuals do not need to sell a car as soon as possible, while for dealers, turnover is extremely important — while the car is on sale, it generates losses. Therefore, it is more often profitable for dealers to reduce the cost of a car so that the sale period is shorter," explained Sergey Ignatov, head of Key customer relations at <url>.
Earlier, on April 23, it was reported that the average price of a new Chinese car in Russia has increased by 30% in four years. So, in January – April of this year, the average price of a new Chinese passenger car in the Russian Federation was 3.5 million rubles. In 2022, the same figure was 2.7 million rubles.
