The Russian government has relaxed a number of requirements for AI regulation
Representatives of the government of the Russian Federation have decided to mitigate some of the requirements of legislation governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, which have been criticized by entrepreneurs. This was announced on Monday, April 27, according to RBC.
The businessmen, as explained in the text, were unhappy with the condition that developers should train models only on domestic data. This, in their opinion, hindered the development, since the amount of information in Russian is not enough.
"The authorities have finalized the draft law "On the basics of state regulation of the application of artificial intelligence technologies in Russia." In the current version, the document does not contain requirements for datasets intended for training models," the article says.
In addition, the requirement for the development and training of sovereign and national models by citizens of the Russian Federation was removed from the text. This step made it possible to grant the appropriate status to the person whose development will be conducted by a domestic legal entity.
Information that all stages of the development and training of AI models will have to take place only in Russia appeared on the website of the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation on March 18. The published text talked about plans to create a so-called trusted AI model. The document was supposed to enter into force on September 1 next year.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, said on April 10 that the country needs to match the pace of change observed at the global level. According to him, the future of Russia and its ability to meet the challenges it faces will depend on them. After that, the Russian leader turned to representatives of the Russian government with instructions to form a plan for the introduction of AI throughout the country. At the same time, he expressed hope for the unification of business representatives and scientists with the government to solve this problem.
