Global defense spending increased to $2.887 trillion in 2025. This was announced on April 27 by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) in its annual report.

"Global military spending rose to $2,887 trillion in 2025, marking the 11th consecutive year of growth, bringing the global military burden - the share of military spending in gross domestic product (GDP) — to 2.5%, the highest level since 2009," the publication says..

It is noted that the three leaders in military spending are the United States, China and Russia, with a combined total of $1.480 trillion, or more than half of the total global spending.

According to the report, U.S. spending in 2025 was 7.5% lower than in 2024. The 29 European members of NATO spent a total of $559 billion in 2025, among them Germany's spending increased by 24% to $114 billion, and Spain's by 50% to $40.2 billion.

The report emphasized that in Asia and Oceania, military spending in total reached $681 billion in 2025, which is 8.1% more than in 2024. China came in second place: its expenditures increased to 7.4%, $336 billion, which were largely aimed at modernizing the army.

Bloomberg reported on April 26 that Australia will spend over $800 million on the supply of armored vehicles and the modernization of armored trucks, while the country's government is increasing military spending at a record pace for peacetime. It is clarified that the Australian Labor government is reviewing its military strategy and expanding the capabilities of the country's armed forces amid increased competition between the United States and China in the Indo-Pacific region.
