A set of problems, including a carbon monoxide leak, has been discovered in the British Ajax armored fighting vehicles (BBMs) worth $8.5 billion. This was reported on April 26 by the Daily Mail (DM) newspaper with reference to a report by the country's Ministry of Defense.

"The official report has caused shock in the Ministry of Defense, as there are concerns that the problematic machine will require additional millions of pounds of government funding to solve a multitude of problems," the article says.

After years of complaints from British military personnel and the hospitalization of dozens of soldiers after military exercises in 2025, a group of inspectors from the Ministry of Defense conducted an assessment and came to a disappointing conclusion. Ajax light tanks suffer from a "multifactorial combination" of problems, including headset malfunction, mechanical defects, and missing air filters, which can lead to carbon monoxide leakage and carbon dioxide accumulation in the cabin.

Inspectors have identified problems with the tracks. Another problem is the loosened or completely missing engine mounting bolts and unreliable power plants, which must provide power when the main engine is turned off.

Since 2017, the British Army has been expecting the delivery of 589 Ajax vehicles, which should form the basis of its armored strike brigades for the next 30 years. The full deployment of the BBM has been delayed for almost a decade due to constant problems with the machine.

In November last year, Sky News reported on the health problems of the British military, who took part in the trials of the Ajax armored vehicle. They have been contacting medical institutions for several years complaining of noise and vibrations in their ears, and in the summer of 2025, some of them had to go to the hospital.
