US President Donald Trump and his allies are using the shooting incident during a dinner with reporters at the Washington Hilton Hotel to justify the need to build a ballroom in the White House. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) on April 26.

"Trump said that the shooting during a dinner with White House correspondents <...> highlighted the need to build his planned ballroom in the White House," the article says.

The US president called the Washington Hilton hotel "not a particularly safe building." Dozens of conservative officials joined Trump, who also tried to use the latest shooting to justify the need for a ballroom project.

"Unfortunately, my wife and I had to be evacuated from the White House correspondents' dinner, along with the president and the entire cabinet. This event is another reason why the Trump ballroom should be built," Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry wrote on social media.

Trump and his wife Melania were evacuated from the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on April 25 after the sounds of gunfire. Later, the American leader announced that the shooter had been detained.

According to the New York Post, the shooter turned out to be a 31-year-old man from California, Cole Thomas Allen. The federal prosecutor in Washington, Jeanine Pirro, said that the detainee after the shooting will appear in court on Monday, April 27.

White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt made the stunning remark shortly before the shooting at a White House Correspondents' Association dinner attended by Trump. Right before the emergency, she promised reporters that "shots would be fired" at the event.
