- FT has learned about the distancing of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio from the war with Iran
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is sometimes called the "secretary of everything," deliberately distanced himself from the US-Iranian conflict in order not to be responsible for the possible failure of negotiations and to maintain his position before the 2028 elections. This was reported on April 25 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.
It is clarified that the head of the US State Department has already twice avoided important meetings with Iran.
"Rubio may already feel that Iran is a complete failure, and the less he is associated with it, the better," the publication says.
It is clarified that Rubio and Vice President Jay Dee Vance are considered likely successors to US President Donald Trump, and it is Vance who is currently negotiating with Tehran. If the dialogue fails, the responsibility will fall on Vance, which is beneficial to Rubio.
According to the FT, the Secretary of State travels abroad less frequently than his predecessors and concentrates on areas that can be perceived as successes.
Politico learned on April 25 that the White House was seriously considering Rubio for president of the United States in the future. It was clarified that after the unsuccessful 2016 presidential campaign, the politician was considered too belligerent and conservative. However, his efforts to remove former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power and his "unwavering loyalty" to Trump have strengthened his position both in the White House and among some supporters of the MAGA movement.
On March 29, Reuters reported that Trump's potential successors, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance and Rubio, took a different position on the conflict in Iran, which could affect their prospects for the 2028 presidential election and support for the current head of the country. It is noted that Vance has taken a cautious position on Iran. At the same time, Rubio "became closely associated with Trump's hawkish position" and became "one of the most ardent defenders of the campaign" in the administration of the American leader.
