Onishchenko named the main deadly diseases for the next five years
Cardiovascular, oncological, and endocrine diseases, as well as influenza, will be the main causes of death in the next five years. This was announced on April 26 by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, epidemiologist and Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Education (RAO) Gennady Onishchenko.
"Cardiology, oncology, and endocrinology are the three leaders that contribute to mortality. Of the infections in the next five years, this is the flu, and it will continue to be one of the leading ones. The flu strains are changing — these are influenza A and B, but the flu will come first," he said in an interview with TASS.
According to the epidemiologist, influenza infection provokes the development of cardiac diseases and causes complications. At the same time, the list of pathologies with the highest mortality rates has not changed over the past 20 years.
Gennady Onishchenko added that even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the flu caused comparable harm to public health. At the same time, the spread of coronavirus indirectly contributed to a decrease in the incidence of influenza due to the restrictive measures introduced by the authorities.
"And the appearance of some new infections. <...> Now we are talking about monkey pox - it has already entered the human population. But cholera is in the first place: the seventh pandemic has not ended yet, which was in 1960, but, thank God, it is not very relevant for our country," the academician concluded.
